Of all the titles we use for Jesus Christ, one of my very favorites is that of "friend."
He said, "Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; but I have called you friends."
He is the very truest friend. He loves unconditionally. He knows our potential, and He expects the best of us. He is kind. He is forgiving. He is joyful. He respects our agency. He is the best listener because He cares-- really, truly, genuinely cares. He teaches us. He does not judge. He just loves us. Simply and purely.
How grateful I am to a loving Heavenly Father who blessed us with His Son. Sometimes I get bummed out about how little Christ is mentioned in Christmas and how much has become traditional rather than spiritual. However, and nonetheless, how incredible is it that we have a whole season, equipped with music and decorations, to celebrate the birth of our Savior? There is a light and goodness during this time of year that inspires people to be kind and serve each other. Love abounds as we gather together as friends, families, and communities to honor traditions and build relationships. That's pretty cool. May that love fill our hearts so full that it lasts all year long.
"Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another."
(1 John 4:7-11)
May we love one another as God loves us. May we be as good a friend to Christ as He is to us. May we treat all of Jesus's friends as our own-- with the utmost love and respect-- not just during Christmastime, but all year round.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
Now for a little holiday cheer, my favorite version of the Christmas story. (Warning: it is not doctrinally sound nor historically accurate, but it is so adorable. She makes some valid points. Let's celebrate Jesus's birthday the right way!)
